Childishly amusing place names

Whilst driving through Yorkshire today i couldn’t help but raise a smile and give a little snigger as i passed through a delightful village by the name of Wetwang.

This got me thinking about other amusingly named places. Here’s a brief list, in no particular order, of some place names which have made me snicker, giggle, chuckle, smile or guffaw.

If i was Danny Wallace i’d probably visit all these places and write a mildly amusing book about my travels and travails.

Splott in Cardiff, of course. There’s a street in Swansea called Salubrious Passage; a hill in Cornwall called Brown Willy; and surely there isn’t a finer village name in all of Northumberland than Kirkwhelpington.
